Nā Pili Wai Summer Program 2021 Overview
This past summer was a momentous and unprecedented one for MLEF! We had the wonderful privilege of creating and hosting our very own summer program for keiki grades 3-8. Through a partnership with Kamehameha Schools, we envisioned Nā Pili Wai, meaning the connecting waters, to bring together over 100 keiki from all across the North shore of Oʻahu and beyond to Loko Ea. What a joy it was to be able to see so much laughter and learning happening here once again as they focused on food sustainability from this ahupuaʻa.
Each week, a different group of keiki were able to learn about the importance of mālama ʻāina and food sustainability through direct engagement with the past and present of Loko Ea––and through this, they were able to share with us a vision of Waialua’s past and future as an ʻāina momona (land of abundance). Keiki enjoyed a full week of activities, games, traditional ʻike, oli, mele, a visit to Nā Mea Kūpono loʻi kalo, and of course mālama ʻāina. At the end of the week, keiki prepared a traditional imu, cooking up an exceptionally ʻono lunch of kalua pig, kalo, cabbage, and more with their ʻohana––showing ʻāina momona in the most delicious way!
We want to express a huge mahalo nui loa and aloha to all of the wonderful keiki and ʻohana who have shared in this experience with us, making this a very special year at Loko Ea fishpond. We also want to convey our deepest mahalo palena ʻole to our ʻohana at Nā Mea Kūpono for providing us kalo for each week and for sharing their immense ʻike with the keiki and our staff. Mahalo nui kākou for helping us to make this a reality!
